During rush hour on 3/30/17, a huge fire below I-85 - northbound - just north of Piedmont Road overpass - resulted in part of the Interstate collapsing. The next morning, inspectors determined that the southbound lanes near this will also have to replaced. Officials are encouraging everyone to use MARTA - bus or rail - if possible. It is likely that the "obvious" surface streets such as Peachtree St. ; Roswell Road, etc. - will be gridlocked. For several months.
3/31 - US DOT -- Secretary Chao "directed Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) officials today to award $10 million in Emergency Relief (ER) funds to help begin repairs on the bridge"
3/31, about 2:30pm -- "The Atlanta Police Department has reopened the Buford-Spring Connector (Georgia 13) northbound to all traffic from West Peachtree Street to I-85" - per WXIA (ch.11)
